# CrossFit in Tacoma: Your Options, Compared Honestly

By [Kathryn Taylor](/coaches) · Owner · Updated August 12, 2026

An honest breakdown of CrossFit affiliates and independent strength & conditioning gyms in Tacoma: what each model gives you, what it costs, and how to choose.

## Is Armor Athletics a CrossFit gym?

No. Armor Athletics is an independent, locally owned strength & conditioning gym in South Tacoma. We are not affiliated with CrossFit, Inc., and we don't claim to be. We offer the same style of training — coached group classes built on barbell lifting, conditioning, and functional movements — without the brand affiliation or the franchise model.

This is usually the first question people ask when they find us, and it deserves a straight answer. CrossFit is a registered trademark and an affiliation program: gyms pay annual fees to use the name and follow the affiliate model. Armor is independent. We've been training Tacoma since 2010 under local ownership, and our programming, pricing, and community standards are set here, not by a corporate parent.

What that means in practice: you get the training methods people associate with CrossFit — constantly varied functional training, Olympic lifting, hard conditioning, real coaching — in a gym that answers to its members instead of a brand.

## What do you actually get at a CrossFit affiliate?

At an affiliated CrossFit gym in Tacoma, you get the branded CrossFit program: daily workouts posted under the CrossFit methodology, affiliate community events like the CrossFit Open, and a gym identity tied to the global brand. Memberships in the Tacoma area typically run $150–$220 per month, sometimes with contracts.

Affiliation buys consistency. If you've done CrossFit in another city, an affiliate here will feel familiar: the whiteboard, the workout structure, the terminology. For people who love the brand and the global community around it, that's worth paying for.

The tradeoffs: affiliates pay annual brand fees that get baked into your membership price, quality varies widely because the brand doesn't police coaching standards day to day, and some affiliates require long-term contracts.

## What do you get at an independent gym like Armor?

The same training methods without the brand layer: coached group strength & conditioning classes, dedicated Olympic lifting platforms, personal training, and a free intro plus On-Ramp for beginners. Memberships run $145–$199 per month, month-to-month with a 30-day cancellation policy — no contracts.

Independence buys flexibility. Our programming is written by our own coaches for our own members — scaled for the retiree in the 9am class and the competitive lifter at 5pm in the same hour. Class sizes stay small enough that the coach knows your name, your squat numbers, and the shoulder you're nursing.

Many of our coaches hold CrossFit Level 1 & 2 certifications alongside credentials like USA Weightlifting and Adaptive & Inclusive Trainer — so the coaching toolkit is the same, plus specialties the brand track doesn't cover: pre/postnatal training, perimenopause and menopause, and aging athletes.

## Which one is right for you?

If you specifically want the CrossFit brand — the Open, the global affiliate network, the name on the wall — join an affiliate and you'll be happy. If what you actually want is coached, barbell-based group training with a strong community, an independent gym gives you the same workout with more flexibility and usually a lower price.

Most people searching for CrossFit in Tacoma want the second thing. They want to get strong, get conditioned, and be coached by someone who watches their form — the brand is just the shorthand they know for that experience.

The honest test: visit both. Any good gym, affiliated or not, will let you tour the space, meet a coach, and try before you commit. Ours is a free 15–20 minute No Sweat intro — a conversation and a tour, not a workout. Compare what you feel walking into each place and pick the one you'll actually show up to.

## What about drop-ins and visitors?

Experienced athletes visiting Tacoma are welcome at Armor for a $20 drop-in class — reach out first so the coach knows your experience level and any limitations. If you're visiting from a CrossFit affiliate elsewhere, you'll find the class structure familiar.

If you're newer to this style of training, start with the free intro instead of a drop-in. We'd rather teach you the movements properly through On-Ramp than have you keep pace with a full class on day one.
